Hat making – making your first hat
If you have some men’s hats or women’s hats in mind but can’t find anywhere that sells it, then why not make one yourself?
Hat making can be very rewarding and good fun. Of course, the techniques for making men’s hats and women’s hat vary immensely, so for this post we’ll start simple with a conical hat.
Conical hats are some of the easiest men’s hats or women’s hats to make and can suit a wide range of fancy dress outfits including Santa and his elves, Robin Hood, wizards and more. In this post we’re going to make some basic winter hats for Christmas time – that’s right, Santa hats!
What you’ll need:
- A piece of red fabric roughly 70cm wide and as tall as you’d like the hat to be.
- Preferably a sewing machine, if not a needle, and thread
- Fluffy white material for the brim of the hat
- A fluffy white bauble
- Fabric glue
How to make the hat:

- Cut the fabric to form a semi-circle and fold it in half to form a quarter circle.
- Sew one of the straight edges of the quarter circle together.
- Open the cavity formed by the fold so that the point of the hat points upwards.
- Stitch the fluffy white material around the brim of the hat where it would be worn
- Cut a groove into the bottom of the fluffy white bauble
- Apply glue to the point of the hat and stuff it into the cut in the bauble.
