Hat size and how to measure your head

So you’ve taken the plunge and decided to invest in men’s hats or women’s hats – a good decision, but which will it be – baseball hats, cowboy hats, or a simple fedora hat? :)

The first thing you’ll need to do is measure your head and hat sizes to find the right men’s hats or women’s hats size for you. It’s really easy to do – grab a measuring tape and put it around your head, slightly above your ears, ensuring the widest part of your head is included. The easiest way to note the circumference of your head is to stand in front of a mirror while you measure and read it off and find out your hat sizes.

How to measure your hat size

Head sizes will vary from country to country. The Germans tend to have the largest men’s hats, and the Far Eastern countries the smallest. Hat sizes and shapes can vary from oval to round to square – western tend to be more oval and far eastern more round. The average size for men’s hats is 58cm or 7 1/8 (UK) and 7 ¼ (US). The average size for women’s hats is 55cm.

Of course every person’s head and hat sizes are different so there’s no substitute to going into the hat shop and trying on the hat beforehand. Head size units will also differ between countries, so if you’re unsure it’s best to write down the centimetres and inches measured.

But to give you a starting point, why not measure your head and read your hat sizes off the table below!
