Baseball hats – the most popular men’s hats?
Baseball hats are soft hats featuring a curved or flat brim at the front and belt buckled, plastic, Velcro or elastic adjusters at the back.
Baseball hats are perhaps the most popular and widespread of all of the men’s hats and women’s hats being worn today. From baseball to bowling, from bars to beaches, baseball hats can be seen in every area of the world, and have grown from functional pieces of headwear to individual fashion statements and major advertising channels.
The first baseball hats
The first appearance of baseball hats was in Spaulding’s 1888 baseball guide, featuring a range of men’s hats made of fabric that protected baseball players eyes from the sun and reduced glare while playing.
The baseball hats also featured holes around the top to keep the players head cool and a skull shape to deflect raindrops.
The wearing of baseball hats
As the popularity of baseball skyrocketed in the United States, it wasn’t long before baseball hats entered the mass market and became a very distinct ways for people to demonstrate their support for their favourite teams.
They are now available in any style and colour, and worn by people from all income levels. From world class sportsman to waiters, baseball hats are now firmly embedded in our day to day life.
The way that baseball hats are worn has changed too, with the bills worn forward, backwards and even on the side of the head and pony tails pointed through the large holes at the back.
Professional use
The versatility of baseball hats has led them to become uniform accessories for major professional organisations, including fast food retailers, delivery firms and the US postal service.
Baseball hats are even worn by military organisations, most notably the US Navy, whose baseball hats feature command logos to denote rank, and SWAT teams, who wear baseball hats to protect their eyes when a helmet would be deemed as excessive.
The future of baseball hats
Baseball hats are now firmly embedded in our day to culture and continue to thrive as both fashion statements and functional pieces or headwear. It is difficult to imagine a world without baseball hats and I’m sure they will continue to thrive for years to come.
